Marriage is essential. According to Elder Bednar, "The natures of male and female spirits complete and perfect each other, and therefore men and women are intended to progress together toward exaltation." In marriage, we talk about becoming one. I have recently seen a lot of buzz on the internet because of the Women's March basically stating that the problem isn't that women were created to do everything a man can do, but that women were created to do everything a man can't do. Many individuals will find fault with this statement suggesting that they should be allowed to choose whatever they want to do regardless of gender. The scientific fact however, is that men can not bare children. The very act of creating life can only be done by a man and woman. This should be cause for reflection about the roles of men and women and how they are not for segregation but for complementation. "By divine design, both a man and a woman are needed to bring children into mortality and to provide the best setting for the rearing and nurturing of children." Additionally, we have been given guiding principles taught by Elder Bednar.
Principle 1: The importance of eternal marriage can be understood only within the context of the Father’s plan of happiness.
Principle 2: Satan desires that all men and women might be miserable like unto himself.
Principle 3: The ultimate blessings of love and happiness are obtained through the covenant relationship of eternal marriage.
